Subj:  Sophia's Vehicle Search [Training]

Hi Carol,
Just wanted to send you a video of Sophia doing a vehicle search during one of our training classes.  We have a Nose Work trial in Hawley PA on the 26th so we've been practicing a lot.  She just loves to do her "searches" and I love watching her work.  I will let you know if she earns her Nose Work 1 title but from what I hear it's very hard.  Anyway, when you watch the video, you can clearly see that when she finds the scent she turns to look at me.  This is her way of letting me know she's got it.  Enjoy!  :-)  :

We spent Columbus Day weekend at Inn by the Sea in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.  Below are a couple of pictures.  We have been there at least a dozen times since Bella came into our lives (only 2 hours from our home in Boston).  Fabulous place to bring dogs!

Best to all-

Dear Carol, attached is a photo of me holding Holly on her 9th birthday.  The photo was taken by a friend of ours as I was heading out to take Holly to the groomer, which isn't her favorite place to go, but I think she knows she looks pretty when she gets back.  Holly has a wonderful spirit, loves to play and chase squirrels, enjoys greeting people, takes lots of naps, and is thoroughly spoiled.  I hope everything is well with you.  I enjoy sharing Holly's annual birthday photo with you.  All the Best, Gordon

Subject:  Carly - Ready for tricks & treats

Here's a picture of Corey and JB's adorable daughter Carly just after her second birthday (born October 4, 2012).  Hope it's OK-enough for Jim to put on the website, as it is a bit overcast today in Long Island. :

Carly's the love of our lives and smart as a whip.  She just passed her obedience course (level 1) and will begin therapy dog training (level 2)  in a few weeks with the Good Dog Foundation in Queens NY.  (Yes we will let you know, Jim and Carol, of her progress - Exam should be in the New Year).

A little bit of that comes from the training and kisses she gets from us... but LOTS of that comes from her dear Auntie Carol who gave her hugs and belly rubs in those first few weeks of her life... thru Hurricane Sandy no less.

All the best,

Kathy, Bruce, Steven and of course Carly

Can't believe it was two years ago this week when we met you, Jim & Kiepre and saw a basket of pups that were a "minute" old.  If I recall she was the only girl and only parti-color in a basket of otherwise jet black males.  You thought she might be a bit of a 'wild thing' but when she fell asleep on Bruce's shoe... we were in love.

Guess we had to be in love as we house broke her thru that miserable winter. LOL  But in the end I always say "you get what you pay for" and we got one of the best from you Carol.

Give Kiepre a belly rub from us.

Fondly,

Kathy

Subject:  "And the winner is..."  [ NoseWork 1 Competition ]

Hi Carol & Jim -
WHEWWwww..! }  It was a very long day, but very well worth it!  Sophia has now earned her "NoseWork 1" Title.  I wish you guys could've been there!  She was AMAZING.  I really didn't know what to expect because the wind was so very strong, and I anticipated that it would be a problem for her.
The trial was held in an elementary school, which excited me so because most of our practicing was done in a school setting!!  There were four search areas:
  • 1.) Interior
  • 2.) Containers (boxes)
  • 3.) Exterior
  • 4.) 3 Vehicles
Each area has only one "hide" ("goal"), and your "team mate" has only three (3) minutes in each search area to locate each "hide".  Sophia and I did the Interior area first, which was a classroom.  Once we got to the start line, Sophia already picked up the scent (she was pulling for me to let her go!)  She found the "hide" on a shelf across the room in 0:20:84 sec.  Next, we moved to the Container search.  This area was a room that had 12 boxes on the floor in a circular arrangement.  Sophia "rocked it", and located the "hide" in 0:28:14 sec.  I'm glad that we did the "inside- searches" first, because these are Sophia's strong points, so it really boosted my confidence level.  The Exterior search was done in an area that consisted of a loading dock with two garbage dumpsters, various wood pallets in different areas, and some huge storage units.  By the time it was our turn, the wind had picked up, and the leaves were blowing everywhere.  ( * You have to understand... Sophia simply LOVES to chase leaves, so I thought for sure they were going to distract her.  As you can imagine, I wasn't feeling terribly confident at this point, so I just told myself I would simply follow her lead. * )  Well, she IMMEDIATELY zoomed to the top right-hand corner of one of the wooden pallets.  Her indication wasn't as strong as I felt it should be (considering the wind, and that she has to "alert" to the exact spot the scent is coming from.)  I felt as though she did smell something, but that it wasn't the main source of odor.  So, I started to walk away such that she could search in a different area... but she brought me right back to the same spot, and simply looked at me as if to say "Mom, its right here... trust me!", so I called it, and she was right!.  Her time to locate this "hide" was 1:14:90, and that "delay" was only because I was the team member who hesitated!  With three areas down, and only one to go, my anxiety level was through the roof because we were sooooo close.  I really had no expectations of doing so well because of all the stories I had heard.  There were folks in this competition who had already failed three times.  Vehicles was the last search, each containing two cars and a truck  The two cars were parked parallel to each other and the truck was parked in front of the two cars, as if to make a T-shape.  The judges had paused momentarily to record their comments, as well as Sophia's "run-times" on the Exterior search.  While waiting for the judges to tell me to start, I noticed Sophia's little nose working a mile-a-minute, and realized that she had already picked up the scent!  I couldn't believe it!!  Again, I had thought to myself that three minutes wasn't nearly enough time to search all three vehicles.  Well... did she prove me wrong!!!  It took her a total of 0:10:41 sec., from the start-line straight to the wheel-well of the truck to stop and look at me!!!  I couldn't believe my eyes.  I thought there was no way she could've  gotten it so fast without even searching the other two vehicles.  I put my trust in her and called it.  Once the judges validated it, I wanted to cry.  Everyone was so impressed with her, not only at that moment, but all day.  There were 40 dogs "trialing", but only 15 earned their titles.  It was an awesome day!  I think because I wasn't expecting things to go so well, it made even better.  Her total time for all four search areas was 2:14:29 minutes, and I couldn't ask for anything more.  Of course, there were dogs there that placed better times, but I definitely was one proud momma!!
When i first signed up for the class, I just wanted to do something fun with Sophia.  Boy, did it turn out to be more than that.  It builds confidence in your dog, along with the whole bonding experience.  Needless to say, I've decided to give Gizmo a break with his agility, and he is starting his "Beginner NoseWork" classes on Tues.  Hopefully, he will love it as much as Sophia does.  Sorry for such a lengthy e-mail, but I wanted all you guys to experience what we did!!

Take care guys,
XOXO
Lorraine

Subj:  [American_Cockapoo] Happy Birthday Rylee (Gorecki)

Today my Rylee girl is 14 years old.  Rylee is still going strong!  I feel very blessed that Rylee still loves running the agility course with me.  Through Rylee I have met so many new friends.  Of course, Carol is one of them.  Little did I know how one little cockapoo puppy was going to change my life when I made that trip to New York back in January 2001!!  Below is a photo taken of Rylee from [an Agility Match on] Sept. 2014:
