Description - The Poodle has been a very popular breed to many cultures for hundreds of years, and is believed to have originated in Western Europe some 400 years ago. Although more than one European country claims to be "home" of this breed, the Poodle is now officially recognized as having originated from France. Regardless of exactly where the Poodle originated, it is clear that this breed descended from the Barbet (a French water dog) and possibly the Hungarian Water Hound. This water dog ancestry is remembered by the name "Poodle", which is a derivative of the German word "Pudel", meaning "one who plays in water." Poodles are highly intelligent, sensitive and "trainable" dogs. They are known for their ability to learn tricks and stunts, making them very popular in the circus environment. Poodles are bred in three size categories: Toy, Miniature and Standard. All three sizes, however, are considered to be one breed and follow the same breed standard. The coat is either tightly-curly or corded, and comes in a variety of colors (e.g., silver, grey, black, apricot, white). It is non-shedding and non-allergenic. The head is long with a narrow, tapering snout. Ears are moderately long, wide and flat, laying on each side of the head. The bone structure of the Poodle is relatively "fine", light-weight. The tail is set high on the rump, and is docked appx. 40 - 50% of it's original length.
Temperament - Some are very affectionate and are great companions, while also being nervous and spiteful. And, they invariably tend to bark alot! |
